In a world where big business is king and money replaces passion, I’ve found myself confused, chasing after things that are supposed to bring fulfillment, but produce only temporary pleasure. Since birth, our culture has ingrained in us that more is better. Have more experiences than your neighbor, make more money, have more clothes, have more cars, the list goes on and on. The business world operates in the same fashion; increase production, produce more sales, generate more income. We’ve held this mindset for 200+ years. Through time this has translated to quantity over quality in every aspect of our lives.

Business: Cheaper manufactured raw materials > durable/sustainable products and processes, fast fashion > quality craftsmanship, mass produced food full of chemicals to increase production > naturally occurring healthy food with some losses, intracompany employee competition > developing lasting relationships with colleagues from the top down, better bottom line > happy employees

Individual: Instagram likes > opinions of your closest people, more outfits > durable/sustainable clothing, cheap/processed/quick to make food > organic ingredients/lots of chopping, busy body/more surface experiences > intimate connections with people, higher salary > meaningful work

I don't know about you, but through time and experience I have realized that I would much rather prefer those > signs to be flipped the other way to < signs. By taking strides to flip those signs, I’ve found so many new passions, developed new hobbies, and connected with a whole bunch of new people along the way. What if we all went back to basics, and started valuing culture, tradition, quality, craftsmanship, history, people?

For a while now I have been thinking about potential business ideas, constantly crunching numbers, and thinking about ways in which I can monetize different hobbies of mine, perhaps encouraging people to revert away from this commonplace view of what it means to be happy and successful, but, I have yet to figure out what that might look like. Instead... in the meantime... I am going to document all of my thoughts regarding these concepts and attempt to share what I find, as I find it. From here on in I will be posting a new exposition to this page every other Friday, while also updating the overall site content as new things come to mind.

My wife jokes with me about how I dive headfirst into things that pique my interest, and explore everything there is to know about them, marveling at how amazing they are, only to move on to the next interest in short order. This does not discredit the marvel that these findings bring, it’s just how my brain works I suppose. I hope what I document from here on in inspires you to also enjoy the culture and substance of things, and that it helps you too flip those > sings into < signs.

Hope you enjoyed the week end read,
